It takes a lot, wedding wise, to surprise me. If you're interested in discussing the finer points of difference between salmon or coral pink for a mid afternoon wedding colour scheme, I'm your woman. Most summers its a steady stream of those favoured classics of whites, blues, pinks and peaches with a few brights thrown in. It's only obvious given the season. And I'm not complaining, those classic combinations just work and stay favourable for a reason, a very good reason. But this year I have to tell you, I've been surprised. Well actually the surprise started last year when I was asked repeatedly to make fruit the object of attention. But the, ahem, fruits of my labour, have only come into (someone stop me) fruition in the last month and in the last 6 weddings I attended just this last week. A small start to what is looking like the very real start of a ground start trend.
What am I talking about? Fruit. And trust me, I'm not the only one. Sure, I attend a lot of weddings but obviously my own clients are a somewhat small sample statistically speaking. However, talking to guests and others that get around the wedding scene just this week, I've been informed that fruit is de rigeur all over town, not just my little corner.
I am fascinated at how quickly this trend has taken hold and I can't wait to see if this style is a bursting bloom for 2014 or if it intends to stay with us into next year and beyond.
Here's what I'm seeing: flowers on heads (I feel so vindicated, you know how much I love an excuse to wear a floral alice band!) which leaves bridesmaids free to carry fruit in their hands. Yes, you heard it here. I've seen a serious trend for pomegranates, red apples and baskets of strawberries feathered out decoratively with leaves and blossom foliage. I've also seen baskets of baby apples carried by younger flower girls. In all cases, the bridesmaids held their fruit in the wedding photos - which is an exciting development because you know that if it makes it into the wedding photos, it's going to hang around for years and spread even further into the wedding trend consciousness.
I adore seeing real trends take hold in this way, its so organic and seriously interesting on a cultural level. You know, many trends are actually just trickle down from where big advertising bucks have been seeded. When you work in the industry you can spot a 'sell' coming your way from a hundred yards. But this is different, it looks different and it feels different. I personally love wedding magazines and know how relevant advertising is to women and couples planning their weddings - there's just no disputing that. Even so, seeing a trend take shape in this way, without major labels pushing the idea first, is exciting and I can't wait to see it enter 'the mainstream' in the bridal seasons ahead. Fruit at weddings?
Bring it on...
