British Traditions: Beloved Cats

Some Honey

Bad luck? According to whom?! Black Cats: here in Britain, a black cat crossing your path is actually considered good luck, not bad! And in the Midlands, a black cat given as a wedding gift is considered to bring good luck to the happy couple. It's also good luck to be greeted by a black cat on your wedding day - whether its yours or not. And in folklore, three of anything is good - so now that you have three reasons to look forward to seeing a black cat, you can happily tip your hat to the next cat you see.

Wedding Cats: for Brides to be getting ready on their wedding day, if your household cat sneezes it signifies a happy marriage ahead, so don't lock moggy out of your dressing room!  But if you do let her in and she goes crazy jumping around the room - it's time (to let her out) and have a word with your hairdresser - it's a sign of strong winds ahead. But the folklore doesn't stop there - if she washes behind her ears whilst you're dressing, its a sure sign of rain. If you spot a cat at your reception or wedding venue, don't let anyone shoo it away. Chasing a cat out of any area is considered bad luck.

Honeymoon cats: If you do have a moggy in the house, make sure it's well contented before you leave. The sound of a cat mewing as you leave your house to go to your wedding is a bad omen (go back and give it what it wants) before setting off.  Off on travels? Greeting a cat as you would a person in passing is considered good luck, so go on and say hello!
