There's something about a white dress that brings out the goodwill in people. I always have a chat with couples and ask them to consider taking a short stroll somewhere on the day. At first they're often reluctant to consider the idea. Actually, most decide they won't. And who can blame them? I mean, seriously, who want's to pop down to the shops when there's a guest list waiting at the venue?
But something usually happens between the planning and the giddy day itself. By the time the confetti shot has been, well, shot- most do go on and decide on the spur of the moment that a quick wedding walk is just the thing!
And why not? stepping outside yourself on your wedding day can really put the occasion into sharp focus.

"I know I said I wouldn't, but suddenly the idea of our first coffee together as man and wife really appealed." - Poppy
"I was on a high, I was too restless to get in the car just then and walking down the cobbled roads and having a minute to ourselves was too romantic to pass up. Everyone stopped to congratulate us. I mean, it shouldn't have meant so much to hear that from strangers, but it felt really special." - Janet
Don't underestimated how charming it is for little girls to want to stop and say something to you, or for elderly gentlemen to stop and wish your both their best.
"An elderly man stepped aside for us as I walked down the High St, he said a few words to us about how happy his marriage had been and it brought tears to my eyes." - Clare
So you've been warned: if you do take a wedding walk have a bridesmaid on standby nearby ready with the tissues and touch ups.
Take your dress out for a pinch of the ordinary on your Big Day but be prepared: you might have to practice graciously accepting compliments galore as well as the occasional happy wave from complete strangers.
Wedding Walk About Ideas:
- I don't know about you, but a post vow latte sounds wonderful to me
- As does an ice cream
- How about ducking into the newsagents to pick up a copy of the day's paper - as a keepsake?
'You'll think I'm crazy, but I went to Waitrose to pick up some snacks for the drive to the airport" - Imogen nope not crazy :)
"We bought a tray of macaroons from my favourite bakery and ate them in the car on the way to our venue. Bliss" - Kasia
"We made the driver drop us off and then we walked to the top of Primrose Hill and took in the sights of London. After all, it's where we met" - Liz
Stop it - before I fall into a swoon...
